They love to play and fly with their human companions, but they also need a lot of time outside of the cage or they may be depressed. Ziggy’s Training
The scarlet Macaw is one of the most well-known species of parrots in captivity due to its striking feathers and vivacious personality. The large macaw is found in tropical rainforests all over Central and South America.
They are monogamous birds and are able to mate for the rest of their lives, usually beginning their breeding cycle around one year after they attain sexual maturity. The hen usually lay three or two eggs of white, which hatch within five weeks. The chicks are then released from the nest about 90 days after hatching, and leave their parents around a year later.
They are a wonderful option for those who have the time and money to provide them with the highest quality of care. They are smart and social, and can be taught a variety of tricks and behavior. While they can be noisy at times, they are mostly curious and playful. Like all parrots, they should be fed high-quality food that includes a specially-formulated parrot mix fresh fruits and vegetables, and high-calcium greens like Kale.
The scarlet macaw is primarily at risk of habitat destruction due to rainforest destruction, and also from a heavy use as a pet bird. They are also listed on CITES Appendix 1 which means that commercial trade of these birds is banned.
