The Best Bedside Cot For Newborns
A bedside crib is a bassinet type crib that attaches to the side of your mattress. This makes it easy to get your baby to sleep for a fuss-free feeding. They are suitable from birth until approximately six months.
Official safe sleeping guidance from both the NHS and The Lullaby Trust recommends newborns sleep in a separate crib from parents’ beds to lower the chance of SIDS. The best cribs for bedside use can help.
1. Arm’s Reach Clear-Vue Co-Sleeper
Co-sleeping was a new concept, a father-and-son team founded Arm’s Reach and came up with a design that would let parents comfortably sleep with their infants. It was the very first cot with a bedside, allowing babies to sleep close without falling over or suffocating the mattress. Clear-Vue has been in use for over 25 years and there have never been any reported fatalities or injuries.
It has built-in leg extensions to adjust for different mattress sizes and comes with sheets and a fitted cover. The bassinet can be used for infants up to five months old or until they start climbing up on their knees. The Co-Sleeper can be used as a stand-alone, standalone bassinet or it can be attached to the parent’s bed using the strap that comes with it and plate. It’s easy to transfer between the two modes by a simple pulling of a string but be aware that it doesn’t meet the federal standards for an attached bed so your child should never be left unattended in this arrangement of sleeping.
McKenna was impressed by the Co-Sleeper’s accessibility, stating that it’s easy to get the baby in and out of the bassinet for mid-night feedings or other needs from your bed. He also praised safety of the Co-Sleeper and said that it meets all requirements for a baby’s crib and bassinet. It’s been in the marketplace for decades and “about 1.5 million units have been sold” without any reported infant injuries or deaths.
In our tests during our tests, the Clear-Vue was the simplest to reach of all the bedside cots we test. Its swiveling sleep area and adjustable height made it easier to get into and soothe your baby. Other models had lower sidewalls, which required you to reach over and over or bend down to reach your child however not the Clear-Vue.
The Clear-Vue was the only one in our top five that wasn’t attached to the parent’s bed. However, it was a close second and far superior to some of the beds we tested that were designed to be connected to parent beds. It is sturdy and solid with plenty of storage.
2. HALO Bassinest
The HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper is the only bedside cot that is able to rotate 360 degrees to keep baby close and makes it simpler for parents to get in and out of the bed. It also has a lower wall that lets moms take care of their babies without getting out of bed–a huge benefit for nursing mothers who require help with their newborns who are feeding in clusters in the early months and weeks after the birth.
The Bassinest has mesh side walls that allow plenty of airflow. The swing feature is ideal for parents who need to keep an eye on their little one throughout the night. Being close to the baby and easy to see can make all the difference in the delirium of new parenthood, especially during those late-night nursing sessions.
The model scored highly in the Convenience Assessment, which evaluates features that make it easy to use and clean. This is a necessity for anyone who must deal with spit ups and diaper blowouts in the beginning of life. The Bassinest can be easily cleaned by water and is light. The mattress pad is also washable. It also has an additional pouch on the side that is handy for storing items such as diapers and nipple cream, which are essential during the sleep-deprived first days of motherhood.
There are several models of the Bassinest that are available, including a less expensive standard Essentia version that does not have any additional features, and a more extravagant LUXE PLUS series that comes with white noise and vibrating to help babies fall asleep and sleep. Both models come with mattresses, a fitted sheet, and a huge storage caddy that is larger than the storage bags on other Bassinest options.
The LUXE PLUS series also comes with the option of lowering the wall lock that is sturdy and stable, a base that adjusts to fit most beds between 22″ to 34″, a floor lamp that allows you to see your newborn throughout the day, and a removable storage caddy that can hold additional bedding or other items. It’s not suitable for travel due the weight and size, however the swivel function is great to keep baby close while you’re at home.

The crib comes with a washable mattress that can be removed to make cleaning easier and an aluminum, lightweight but sturdy frame for easy movement. It has four lockable wheels to ensure it stays in place and is covered with a rubber-coated fabric to avoid scratches on the floor.
The Roomie Glide’s adjustable height is among its most useful features. You can adjust the legs so that they are perfectly aligned with the mattress of your baby. This is particularly helpful when you’re breastfeeding since it allows you to feed your baby close by without having to leave your bed. The height reduces the risk of your child falling out of the crib.

You can choose a leisurely or a lively pace. The glide feature can be locked after your baby has fallen asleep.
The only downside of the Roomie Glide cot is that it is only suitable for newborns. You’ll need to upgrade your baby’s cot to a bigger cot once he or she is six months old (normally around the time they move into their room). Roanna found it to be a fantastic cotbed though and would certainly recommend it.
