Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) is a professional con artist. His occupation is diverse - a network of dry cleaners in New York, forgeries of paintings, cash loans to people who cannot take out a loan from a bank.

Irving is married, with a wife named Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) and an adopted son, Danny. Irving can't leave Rosalyn in any way, because she constantly plays on his parental feelings.

One day, former stripper Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) enters his life and they fall in love with each other. Irving, having become close to Sydney, tells her about his machinations and offers to cooperate in his scams.

Sydney begins to pose as an English lady, Edith Greensley, who is involved in banking. With her sexuality, she "processes" rich clients, whom she then twists around her finger with Irving.

One day, a strange young man named Richie (Bradley Cooper) comes to them and asks them to help him take out a loan. He gives Irving several thousand dollars, after which the latter is arrested. It turns out that this Ricci is an FBI agent.

Now our sweet couple is facing imprisonment, but Richie offers a deal. In exchange for his freedom, Irving must hand over four more professional scammers to the FBI.

Irving and Sydney have no choice but to accept Richie's terms and start working together. There are a lot of adventures ahead of them.

Review

I discovered director David O. Russell through the films "The Fighter" and "A Collection of Rays of Hope."" (Silver Linings Playbook, in Russian. The translation version of "My boyfriend is a psycho"), which I really liked.

The authors of this tape note that it is based on real events. Indeed, in the 70s and 80s, the FBI conducted a special operation Abscum, and as a result, five officials were convicted of corruption. The swindler Mel Weinberg, who collaborated with FBI agents, was involved in this special operation. However, the director did not bother to shoot a "literal" crime drama, but made a movie in his own way, making many changes, filling the picture with good humor, resulting in a very stylish, funny and slightly crazy comedy.

In addition, according to Christian Bale, most of the film was pure improvisation. But Russell was fine with that: for him, only the characters themselves were important.

And from this, in my opinion, the tape has only benefited. I'm already tired of watching all these FBI (CIA) showdowns, boring judicial red tape, bribes, blackmail, secret agents, and so on.

The director just made fun of all these cliches: freaking con artists who talk to the mayor about oysters, an FBI agent who is hysterical and moronic, who also behaves inappropriately, a caricature mafia. Many people say - what the hell is this? But personally, I really liked this improvisational production from Russell. After all, it's a comedy, isn't everything supposed to be true here?

As for me, the movie turned out to be simply magnificent! The painting satisfies the highest aesthetic tastes - costumes, hairstyles, music, clothes, style, interior, decorations - all this is done at a very high level. Plus, the movie is very light, positive and with incredible energy. I enjoyed watching it immensely.

A bit of comedy, a bit of drama, a bit of scams, a bit of all kinds of fun, a bit of romance, music, dancing, but Russell knows how to shoot in such a way that all these genres successfully combine and harmoniously complement each other.

Reviews of "American Hustle" often say that Russell is trying to follow Martin Scorsese. So, it's very similar in form - a reproduction of the seventies era, atmosphere, style, but in content it's something completely different. Although Scorsese, in his superhit "The Wolf of Wall Street" last year, also showed that he could have a lot of fun.

I must say that the acting ensemble is simply magnificent: Bale, Cooper, Adams, Lawrence - they all give such an even acting performance, it's a pleasure to watch. David O. Russell is very good at working with actors, and it shows perfectly well - the transformation of actors on the screen is really impressive.

Christian Bale appeared here in a very unusual image of a balding fat conman. The character came out a little funny, but at the same time - cute. Bale is generally very responsible and selfless in his approach to film roles. In the movie "The Machinist", for example, he lost as much as 30 kg. (!), where he looked like a living skeleton. And for the role of Irving Rosenfeld, on the contrary, he gained a lot of weight, gaining more than 18 kilograms. Even Robert De Niro himself did not recognize Bale when the director introduced them to each other on the set.

I liked Amy Adams as Sydney Prosser. Some people say that she overdid it a little, but for a movie like this, where everyone is having a good time, that's exactly what you need. The fuse, energy, and sexuality are super.

Bradley Cooper played the goofy FBI agent Richie Dimas perfectly. Richie not only talks nonsense all the time, but he also behaves quite strangely. Aggression, tantrums, panic, sexual assaults-it was all just wonderful.

Frantzis Lawrence in the role of Rosalyn Rosenfeld gave a master class again. Emotionally unstable, a little psychotic, incendiary, impressionable, passive-aggressive - brilliant! I really liked the scene of the quarrel with Bale's character, her flirting with businessmen, and the conversation in the bathroom with Amy Adams - it was just gorgeous.

Jeremy Renner has never starred in David O. Russell before. Renner is actually a very good actor, but he wasn't particularly impressed with Carmine Polito as mayor, but his bow and hairstyle are very stylish.

I liked Robert De Niro as the tough mobster Victor Taleggio.

Taleggio came from Miami, where at one time he was the right-hand man of Mayer Lansky himself. Victor earned a reputation as a murderer, he didn't bury corpses. He believes that a corpse is perceived more convincingly if you leave it in the middle of the street. There's a cool scene in the movie where De Niro's character started talking to the sheikh "in other languages."

Well, I also note the role of Jack Huston ("two-faced&Richard Harrow from The Underground Empire), who fell in love with Lawrence. It was also nice to see this actor in the film.
