Lolita’s care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko’s reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn’t get the chance to return to the sea.
Lolita’s captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her by putting her through head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member and plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility on Washington’s west coast where she could stay for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself not a concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. The nation’s most active activists including Ric O’Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her retirement from Seaquarium’s stage and eventual release into the wild.

The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring, and squid daily.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many claim is too small for her.
Lolita’s Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who wish to see her released to the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for many years. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling illness that has left her in a fragile state.
The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita’s present condition. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging quickly and that her health is declining.
As her captor does not have to disclose this information, it’s unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an integral role in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita Many people are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium’s new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and even meet the orca believed to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale that died on Friday as a result of what was thought to be a kidney problem.
